Why do I like the old show Firefly so much? So many reasons. I realize it glorifies the Wild West. I realize these are just actors and written dialogue, not reality, but it is so welcoming to think there is a possibility that there are really people in the world willing to sacrifice everything, fight whoever need be, to do the right thing. Always. Or as close to that as possible.
And I also like that it has strong female characters and I love the fact that it doesn't make prostitutes out to be vial and repugniated. They are revered. This to me seems better after all they are there because of demand. They don't stand out in the cold or however they are doing it for no reason. There is and always will be a demand for them. The church used to incorporate them into its sanctuary at some points in history (Roman?) Why make something illegal that is going to happen whether we like it or not? No one is being harmed. Really. It's a mutually beneficial situation. Sometimes. (Though lately with the child/sex slave casualties who can say that is for sure anymore.) These woman/men for the most part have no where else to go for money (because if they did don't you think they would), for some the allure of easy cash is too enticing, for others already traumatized by child abuse it is the only way they know to live; being abused. I think if we went back to revering prostitutes and respecting them as people with rights and hearts and monetary needs. If we saw that some good can actually come from them as a society. That they do provide a vital service, then we wouldn't have a sex slave trade (or at least not as much of one; because unfortunately it seems there will always be sadists in the world).
Anyway. Digressing. I love the show. I'm going to watch them all again right now (see how far I get before I pass out).
